Synchronicity
I thought it was a classic “synchronicity” when a Japanese television station aired the first half of the Film “Titanic” this week, within days of the recent disaster that killed five people seeking to see the famed ship’s wreckage. Surly plans had been made for showing the film before the deadly implosion.
And now, another one.
I’ve always been intrigued by synchronicities, and I’ve had some wild ones. Have you ever walked down a quiet empty street late at night at a random time, seen headlights in the distance and eventually had to stop walking as the sole car seen anywhere turned into its residence directly in front of you? This is a manifestation of what I’ve come to see as a sort of quality “gravity.” The famed psychologist Carl Jung described this phenomena as a tendency for like things “wanting” to occur together. Sometimes it appears that time and space intersect and “charge” a moment and location.
Another common but impressive synchronicity that happens to me often is that I’ll be writing and, as I write an individual word, someone on the television or YouTube will utter the exact word. Sometimes these have been words rarely used in common conversation. I no longer view these things in awe but they do elicit a puzzled smile.
While many see such occurences in a mystical light, I prefer to see them as a natural phenomena — impressive but ultimately no more so than the magical phenomena that occur in nature regularly. Quality and attributes exist on a spectrum. Everything has an affinity to something else in degrees of harmony and dissonance. We can coordinate colors, flavors, and musical notes in levels of harmony or discord. When coincidence displays things of like substance before us, we can certainly marvel at the order in it all.
On a few occasions, I’ve looked forward to seeing a great work of classical music and created an astrological horoscope for the first performance of the work and the composer who wrote it. When viewing the predictive “transits” in the chart, there are inevitably significant configurations almost to suggest that the entity (person, music, institution, etc.) is being activated on a certain schedule of sorts. I’d quickly note that when the Soviet Union was experiencing its dissolution, very significant transits were occuring to the horoscope for the entitiy’s “birth.” And, that’s not all; equally significant transits to the chart of the long dead Karl Marx — layers of relationship unfolding.
The next time you experience a “coincidence,” ask yourself what is actually manifesting before your eyes and what it says about this Matrix-like world we inhabit. Then, knowingly smile and carry on.
